Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called on Tuesday for Russia's labor relations practices to be brought in line with international standards.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called on Tuesday for Russia's labor relations practices to be brought in line with international standards.

"Dialogue between employers and employees is almost always unequal, while the level of social guarantees is minimal," he said.

Over 90% of collective agreements are purely pro forma, containing provisions that are covered by the Labor Code anyway, the president said.

Current labor practices need to be brought in line with international standards, he added.

Social partnership is considered to be "the most effective mechanism for improving employees' social status in civilized countries," Medvedev said.

Incentives are needed to stimulate employers to live up to their social responsibility, he said.
