A suspect in the 2009 murder of Russian lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova tried to commit suicide in a Moscow pre-trial detention facility on Wednesday, a lawyer said.

A suspect in the 2009 murder of Russian lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova tried to commit suicide in a Moscow pre-trial detention facility on Wednesday, a lawyer said.

Yevgeniya Khasis is due to appear in court on Wednesday along with her common-law husband, Nikita Tikhonov, who is also charged with the double murder.

Tikhonov, made a suicide attempt on Tuesday. Both tried to slit their wrists.

"Bandages were put on Khasis's wrists, she was given a painkiller jab and sent to court," the lawyer said.

The lawyer did not offer any explanation as to the motives behind the double suicide attempt, but said he would petition to postpone the hearings on grounds of poor health.

Human rights lawyer Markelov and reporter for the liberal paper Novaya Gazeta, Anastasia Baburova, were gunned down in downtown Moscow in January 2009.

Khasis and Tikhonov are both linked to the ultranationalist group, Russky Obraz.

Russia's Investigative Committee believes Baburova was killed as a witness to the murder of Markelov, who was an active member of an anti-fascist movement.

Tikhonov and Khasis have denied any role in the double murder.
