Russia's Public Chamber has asked the Prosecutor's General Office to ban the anti-Semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the Chamber's press service said on Friday.

The Protocols, written in 1903 and widely regarded as a forgery by Tsarist secret police officials, outlines a Jewish plot for achieving world supremacy. The book was promoted by the Nazis in Hitler's Germany, and is still accepted as a real document by neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic groups across the world, including in Russia.

In a letter to the head of the Prosecutor General's Office, Yury Chaika, Public Chamber's secretary Yevgeny Velikhov has urged the inclusion of the book in a list of the extremist literature since numerous Russian and European scholars have repeatedly proved the Protocols' fraudulence and provocative character.

Velikhov said the book "threatened the multi-ethnical world, as well as the unity and the harmony of our country."

The Public Chamber was created in 2005 to analyze draft legislation and monitor the activities of parliament, government and other government bodies of Russia and its regions.

The chamber outlines recommendations and makes conclusions on violations of freedom of speech, national issues, human rights, as well as the laws and other regulatory acts, but has no executive power.
