Sergei Mironov, who was recalled from the post of the speaker of the upper chamber of the Russian parliament on Wednesday, may become a State Duma deputy, the leader of his party said.

Mironov, the speaker of the Federation Council, who was elected by the St. Petersburg legislature controlled by United Russia, has come under attack over his recent calls for the resignation of St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko and repeated critical statements about his home city.

"He has now several variants. First, he may engage in the party's activities and preparations for the forthcoming elections. Second - he is to formally be offered a seat in St. Petersburg's Legislative Assembly, which had earlier elected him as a senator. And, thirdly, Mironov... may get a lawmaker's mandate, if any member of the A Just Russia faction [in the State Duma] gives up his," said Nikolai Levichev, the Just Russia chairman.

Forty three members of the St.Petersburg Legislative Assembly voted to recall Mironov, five were against. A Just Russia, the party Mironov led until recently, has only 13 seats in the assembly.
