Russian reclusive maths genius Grigory Perelman has yet not responded to St. Petersburg officials who have offered to provide his elderly mother with free medical assistance, a spokesman for the city administration said on Friday.

Luybov Perelman, 73, urgently needs cataract extraction, which costs some $5,400 in Russia.

Her son made the headlines in 2010 for his rejection of a $1 million prize which the Clay Mathematics Institute awarded him in 2010 for proving the Poincare conjecture - a problem that had been puzzling scientists for over a century.

The Clay Mathematics Institute announced has since divided Perelman's $1 million between young mathematicians.

Officials recently agreed with doctors from Russia's prestigious Svyatoslav Fyodorv center that Luybov Perelman could have a medical examination there. However, the officials did not manage to tell the secluded genius the news personally and left him a letter.

"Grigory Perelman has not responded to the letter yet," an official said.
