A group of female activists in the East Siberian city of Ulan-Ude announced on Wednesday the creation of a public movement "for blondes" to fight social problems in the region.

Ironically, Ulan-Ude is the capital of the autonomous Buryatia republic, whose ethnic Buryat people are of Mongol descent and have dark hair. But activist Nadezhda Lopatyuk says the name is meant to be tongue-in-cheek and aims to attract women with all hair colors.

"We want to unite active women and young people with a good sense of irony, to promote socially-beneficial ideas and a healthy lifestyle," Lobatyuk said.

Several dozen people of varying professions have already joined the movement, which the activists say will not be a "club of glamorous girls," but a serious public organization.

The organization has already planned several events to take place in the next few weeks, including a brides' march and a blonde census, the activists said.
