Russian President Dmitry Medvedev submitted to the Federation Council the candidacy of Yury Chaika for the prosecutor's general post, the Kremlin said on Monday.

Chaika, 60, has served as the head of the Prosecutor General's Office since 2006, before that he served as Justice Minister for seven years.

According to the Russian Constitution, the prosecutor general is appointed or dismissed by the Federation Council after a president's submission of a candidate.

Chaika was appointed for the post on June 23, 2006, for five years, so his current term expires in three days and a new appointment should take place.
