Retirement benefits in Russia will increase by 11 percent and social security benefits will rise by 6 percent next year, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev promised in his budget address on Wednesday.

Retirement benefits in Russia will increase by 11 percent and social security benefits will rise by 6 percent next year, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev promised in his budget address on Wednesday.

"The average retirement benefit will increase by more than 11 percent in 2012 and the average social security benefit will rise by 6 percent," Medvedev's statement said on the Kremlin's official website.

The president also vowed to provide all World War II veterans with housing by 2012 and to continue implementing "health care and education modernization programs, fostering the development of culture, physical education and sports."

It is still unknown whether Medvedev will run as a candidate in the 2012 presidential elections. In line with the Russian Constitution, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who served two consecutive presidential terms in 2000-2008, will become eligible to run for a new presidential term in 2012. Neither Putin nor Medvedev has ruled out his possible candidacy.

Medvedev said earlier this month that his running for presidency simultaneously with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in the 2012 elections would be counterproductive.
