The bodies of 14 of the ice-hockey players who died in a plane crash on September 7 were buried on Saturday in Yaroslavl.
Lokomotiv Yaroslavl’s chartered jet crashed on take-off near the Volga city of Yaroslavl as the team were heading to the Belarusian capital of Minsk.
Thirty-six players and officials died in the crash, along with seven crew.
The funerals took place after a memorial ceremony at the club’s arena. Police barred entry to the cemetery to anyone but relatives and close friends.
“Fans will have a chance to visit the graves later,” a police official said. “We don’t want the relatives to be disturbed during the funerals.”
The funeral of Lokomotiv defender Ruslan Salei also took place on Saturday in his home city of Minsk, the capital of Belarus. Salei played 14 seasons in the NHL, before joining Lokomotiv in July.
Lokomotiv president Yury Yakovlev announced on Saturday that the team would miss the 2011/2012 Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
"We should rebuild the team, there's no doubt about that," Yakovlev said. "But to that end, we need time and people."
The Lokomotiv roster included players and coaches from 10 countries, including the team's Canadian coach, Brad McCrimmon and Swedish Olympic champion goalie Stefan Liv.
Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, founded in 1949 as the team of the Railways Ministry, is one of Russia's leading hockey teams and came runner up in the nascent KHL in 2008 and 2009. In 1997 it took the Russian Superleague title and won back-to-back championships in 2002 and 2003.
International Ice Hockey Federation president Rene Fasel called the crash "the darkest day in the history of our sport."

- aquaFrom Romania18:24, 10/09/2011Thank you.
- lmMy deepest sympathy goes out to the families in this saddest of moments.22:15, 10/09/2011My earlier comments of the president statements leave no ifs that he was or is confused.
If one were to check carefully one would see a clearly confuse man making rash statements and I quote his own words here “Medvedev also spoke about the need to renew the air fleet in the country. First priority must be attached to the safety of passengers, rather than to the interests of the domestic aviation industry” (mind in paralysis state)
After this from him: Medvedev said that all air crashes that have taken place in Russia in 2011, occurred to the aircraft of small air carriers. (Very confuse)
"The statistics shows that small companies control their fleet poorly because of the lack of funds and personnel," the president said. (Astonishing revelations)
Then this: “There is a problem of the air fleet, and the government, as it appears, will have to make a difficult decision. The value of human life must be placed higher than special observations about the support of the home industry," the president said. (Hard to comprehend this statement)
Then: ’Those who are not ready to work will have to go. The human factor, which is much talked about during such accidents, exists everywhere, and our country is not an exception. As a rule, this factor plays the leading role, but we have to do our best to minimize it," Medvedev said. (Again tongue in check)
Mr. President no amount of foreign plane can stop the crashes; you seems to lead from fear rather that a strong political will to improve your country aircraft industry, opting for the easy way out with buying aboard It is not the way.
Such hasty comments only to put tongue in check:"We have to think about our companies, of course. But if they are unable to promote themselves, then we will have to purchase equipment from abroad," the president said. "This will have to be a large program with big money involved," he added.
Fix your industry find the political will and make your country aviation industry proud once again support your own because no other aircraft makers think this way no matter the circumstances they strives for their own. These tragedies can be greately reduse with the right political will not looking aboard. - amitIce Hocky plane crash victims laid to rest22:45, 10/09/2011Very sad moment in the history of Russian Game.
