Russia’s communications minister has said Russia is ready to share its take on the online government with developing countries.

Russia’s communications minister has said Russia is ready to share its take on the online government with developing countries.

Speaking during a telecoms conference in Geneva, Igor Shchyogolev said developing countries could make good use of Russia’s electronic public service system, intended to help fight corruption and red tape among regional officials. It will also expedite payments of public utilities and government services.

Some $150 million has been allocated towards the scheme so far, Shchyogolev told the ITU Telecom World 2011 forum. A similar system in Singapore has taken $15 billion over the past 10 years to build, he added.

“If not-very-wealthy countries are going to build [an online government], it’s easier to adapt our development, rather than try to reproduce those expensive ones,” he said.

He added that Russia was ready to share all of its technology, or parts of it.

The idea of creating an online public service system has been advocated by President Dmitry Medvedev.
