The Russian-U.S.visa liberalization deal that was signed in November, is a step towards a visa-free regime between the two countries, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.

“It [a visa deal] significantly boosts our relationship and I think it will become a step towards a visa-free regime with the United States,” Lavrov told a press conference.

In November, Moscow and Washington exchanged notes to ease visa requirements between the two countries. Under the new rules, business people and tourists will get 3-year multi-entry visas, while government officials of both states will receive one-year multi-entry visas.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin proposed scrapping visa restrictions between the two countries altogether during a meeting with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden in Moscow in March, 2011.
