The crew of a yacht belonging to Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov has saved the lives of a group of divers who got into trouble in the Caribbean Sea when their boat was wrecked by strong waves, the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The accident involving nine divers sailing some 4 miles from the shore in a 29-meter plastic boat occurred early on Tuesday, the newspaper said. The divers were on their way from the Mexican island of Cozumel to the port of Playa del Carmen, which hosts a shark diving spot.
Some two and half hours after they got in trouble, a SOS signal was received by Kerimov’s ICE yacht, which was sailing nearby.
The divers were discovered two hours later some 16 miles away from the site where their boat had sunk, the captain of the ship was quoted by the paper as saying in a report.
Three patrol boats arrived at the site when the divers were already on board the yacht, the report said.
Kerimov, who is listed as number 118 on Forbes' list of the World’s Billionaires, with an estimated net worth of $7.8 billion, was reported to have given a reward to the captain of the yacht.
