Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a probe into fake video clips posted on the internet purportedly showing ballot stuffing in Sunday’s forthcoming presidential polls, committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said on Thursday.

The clips, dated March 4, presidential election day in Russia, record alleged ballot rigging at polling stations, he said.

Criminal charges could be pressed against the persons who had produced and disseminated the materials, he said.

The Investigative Committee will also look into reports that absentee ballots were being bought and sold ahead of the polls.

The remarks come a day after Russian Prime Minister and presidential hopeful Vladimir Putin claimed he knew the opposition was making preparations to stuff ballot boxes and use video clips to discredit the presidential polls.

“They will stuff the ballots, they will monitor the process and then they will present [us with the facts],” he said. “We are already seeing that. We already know.”
