Anti-terrorism chiefs from the countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) made cutting off financing for terrorism and extremism their top priority at a meeting on Thursday.
The heads of anti-terrorism services from the CIS, a Russia-led alliance of post-Soviet countries, and representatives of other organizations met in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh.
The participants said their countries “lacked anti-terrorism security” and “a wide range of negative tendencies that threaten the society are likely to develop in the future.”
“Uncovering and eliminating terrorism financing channels should be a priority,” the participants said in a statement.
CIS anti-terrorism chiefs also agreed that their states should boost international search efforts for suspects in terrorism- and extremism-related crimes and ensure their timely extradition.
The meeting brought together anti-terrorism chiefs from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, as well as high-ranking law-enforcement officials from the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
