The unregistered opposition People's Freedom Party (Parnas) has said it will not take part in a meeting with outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev next week.

The unregistered opposition People's Freedom Party (Parnas) has said it will not take part in a meeting with outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev next week.

Party co-chair Mikhail Kasyanov made the announcement on Twitter.

Medvedev is expected to meet unregistered party leaders on Monday, in the second such gathering to take place in the past two months.

Party spokesman Konstantin Merzlikin downplayed the importance of the meeting, saying it will lack any "substantial discussion."

Parnas was denied registration in June last year but a new bill awaiting President Medvedev’s final approval makes it possible for it to re-apply.

The bill, passed by parliament earlier this month, reduces the membership requirement for registering a party to 500 people from 45,000 currently. It would also abolish the requirement for parties to collect voter signatures in order to take part in elections.

An environmental activist has told RIA Novosti that Medvedev will sign the legislation during the Monday meeting.
