Sergei Kuzhugetovich Shoigu was born May 21, 1955 in Chadan, in the Russian region of Tuva. A General of the Russian Army, he has been the emergencies minister since 1994.

Shoigu graduated from the Krasnoyarsk Polytechnic Institute in 1977, majoring in construction engineering. He later received a PhD in economics.

From 1977 to 1978 he worked as a foreman at the Promkhimstroi Chemical Trust in Krasnoyarsk and also served as foreman and then department head at the Tuvinstroi construction Trust in Kyzyl during the same period.

In 1979 he joined the Achinskaluminiystroi Trust, where he rose from construction supervisor to director over the next five years.

In the mid to late 1980s he continued to work in the construction industry, based in the towns of Sayanogorsk and Abakan. He was elected deputy head of the local Communist Party in the latter, before being named an inspector for the Kranoyarsk territory branch of the party.

In 1990, Shoigu moved to Moscow and was appointed deputy head of Russia’s State Committee for Architecture and Construction. The following year he led the State Committee for Emergencies, before serving as chairman of the committee from 1991 to 1994. Shoigu was appointed emergencies minister in 1994.

He is co-chairman of the United Russia political party and has been a member of the Security Council since 1994.

In February 2010 inventor Viktor Petrik used Shoigu’s name in the branding of a water filter he invented, without securing the emergencies minister’s permission.

He was appointed Moscow Region governor on Thursday.

Shoigu is married and has two daughters.
