A new blast hit the capital of Dagestan on Sunday, injuring one person, the republican Interior Ministry said.

“A VAZ car blew up in Akushinskogo Avenue in Makhachkala. According to preliminary information, a young man who drove the car was taken to hospital. His identity is being established. Experts say the explosive was attached to the bottom of the car,” the ministry said.

The explosion comes just three days after two powerful blasts rocked the Dagestani capital on Thursday evening, killing 13 and injuring over 100 people.

The first blast, apparently a suicide car bomber, detonated near a police field post on the outskirts of the city at about 10:10 p.m. local time. The second explosion occurred nearby 10 minutes later, when a vehicle with emergency responders had arrived at the scene.

The explosions could be heard throughout the city, located in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region.

Dagestan remains a hotbed of Islamic insurgency, with rebels regularly carrying out attacks on law enforcements and civilians in the North Caucasus republic.
