Conditions of imprisonment for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout have been softened and he will be transferred to medium-security prison in Marion, Illinois, his lawyer Albert Dayan said on Friday.

Conditions of imprisonment for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout have been softened and he will be transferred to medium-security prison in Marion, Illinois, his lawyer Albert Dayan said on Friday.

The U.S. earlier announced plans to transfer Bout to the so-called supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, where convicted terrorists and other dangerous criminals are serving their sentences, often in solitary confinement.

“Terms of imprisonment for Viktor Bout have been softened comparing with the prison in Florence. On the one hand, we saw a compromised decision, on the other - a number of problems remain, in particular the remoteness of the prison, which makes it difficult for consulate visits and for visits of his relatives,” Dayan said, but did not say when the transfer would take place.

Russian Prosecutor General Yury Chaika earlier spoke with his U.S. counterpart Eric Holder telling him that Bout should serve his sentence in standard conditions and not as a dangerous criminal.

Bout, a former Soviet military officer, was found guilty of conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals, including military officers and employees, conspiring to use anti-aircraft missiles, and selling millions of dollars’ worth of weapons to the Colombian rebel group FARC. He is now serving a 25-year prison term in the Unites States.
