Russia and Britain have almost similar views on some elements of the Syrian crisis and will work together to find possible solutions to the conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday after talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron in London.

“We have pointed out that there are some points [related to the situation in Syria] that we appraise almost identically,” Putin said.

“We agreed that we will search for ways to solve this problem together and give an additional impetus to our foreign ministries to work together to find acceptable solutions,” he added.

Putin is one a one-day visit to London to meet with Cameron and watch part of the Olympics.

Cameron said there were differences between the British and Russian positions on Syria, but both London and Moscow agreed that they wanted peace and stability to be restored in Syria.

The comments came as the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday it would not support a draft resolution introduced to the United Nations General Assembly by a group of Arab countries.

The ministry called the document “one-sided and unbalanced,” saying that it blames the ongoing bloodshed in Syria only on the Syrian government, therefore encouraging rebels to continue their fight against troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

Moscow insists that both the government and opposition fighters are responsible for the violence which has already claimed up to 20,000 lives, according to Syrian activists.

The Russian ministry said the proposed draft resolution “intrudes into the UN Security Council’s prerogatives, which is against the provisions of the UN Charter.”

The Russian ministry reiterated its support for a peace plan proposed by the UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and decisions worked out during a Syria Action Group meeting in Geneva in June.

Russia and China have vetoed three Western-backed UN Security Council resolutions against Assad fearing the repetition of “the Libyan scenario” in Syria.
