The governor of Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Region declared Thursday as the day of mourning following an aircraft crash that killed 10 people and injured four.
On Wednesday, the twin-engine Antonov An-28, en route from the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, was carrying 12 passengers, including two children, and two crew members, when it crash landed. Four people, including a child, survived the crash and were hospitalized.
“A tragedy occurred and it was a blow to all Kamchatka residents. I express my words of support and deep condolences to relatives of the killed passengers and crew members,” Governor Vladimir Ilyukhin said.
The aircraft lost radio contact with traffic control at 12:28 local time [00:28 GMT] shortly before it was due to land at an airfield in the village of Palana, about 990 kilometers north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
The pilots had been trying to make an emergency landing when the plane came down in woodland some 10 kilometers from Palana.
Investigators are currently considering three variants of the crash, which are a technical failure, poor weather conditions and crew error.
