MOSCOW, October 2 (RIA Novosti)
A Russian skydiver has died from injuries sustained in a botched world record jump in California, her brother told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.
Irina Sinitsyna, a skydiving world champion, broke several cervical vertebrae in a jump on September 23 at the Perris Valley airfield.
"This morning she died," her brother Boris Sinitsyn said.
After colliding with another diver in mid-air, Sinitsyna got entangled in the parachute straps and was unable to open her reserve chute.
She was part of a 100-strong team attempting to break formation skydiving records while wearing bat-like wing suits that enabled them to fly forward while falling.
Sinitsyna was transported back to Russia on Friday in an Emergencies Ministry plane in critical condition, but could not be saved.
"The condition of the patient continued to be extremely critical due to the nature of the injuries," a Russian Health Ministry spokesperson told RIA Novosti.
"Despite our best efforts, the patient passed away overnight."
