Initial analysis of the flight data recorders in an An-28 turboprop which crashed in Russia's far east Kamchatka region last month has shown no signs of engine failure or fire up until impact, the Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK) said on Wednesday.

The An-28, flying from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Palana, crashed on September 12, 6 miles (10 km) from its destination. Ten of the twelve passengers and two crew on board died, including both pilots.

"The plane hit treetops, causing both engines to stop after which the plane flew another eight seconds and hit the ground," MAK said, but has not yet explained why the crash occurred.

MAK said the weather did not prevent the aircraft approaching the airfield to land, but nearby mountains were hidden by cloud.
