MOSCOW, February 21 (RIA Novosti) – Russia vowed on Thursday to bring to trial American citizens it alleges have evaded punishment for “serious crimes” against Russian adoptees, the country’s chief investigator said.
“We intend to prosecute all those US nationals who have not been properly punished for serious crimes against Russian children on US territory,” said Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the Investigative Committee, an FBI-style law enforcement agency.
He said Russia would place all those people concerned on the international wanted list and seek to have them arrested in absentia by Russian courts.
Russian officials have criticized investigations into the deaths of Russian adoptees in the United States and alleged that courts hand down softer punishments for crimes against children from Russia.
Bastrykhin’s pledge comes amid a growing row over the death of a three-year-old Russian child in the United States. Russian officials say the boy, Maxim Kuzmin, was murdered by his US adoptive mother in Ector County, Texas.
Russia’s child rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov tweeted on Monday that Kuzmin, also known by his US name Max Shatto, had “numerous injuries” and had been given powerful “psychotropic substances” by his adoptive mother.
However, the Ector County sheriff, Mark Donaldson, said he had “no idea where that information came from.”
“We don’t have any other information right now, until the autopsy report comes in,” he told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
Astakhov’s accusation whipped up a storm of outrage in Russia, with nationalist politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of the LDPR party, alleging Americans adopted Russian children to “torment” them, in comments aired on state-run television earlier this week.
The incident also fuelled a row over a recent Kremlin ban on US nationals adopting Russian children, adopted hot on the heels of a law passed in the United States that introduces sanctions against Russian officials suspected of human rights abuses.

- arsanlupinOh really?06:36, 23/02/2013American adoptive parents are crucified online for 19 Russian adoptees – of over 60,000 adopted in total. International relations are strained, Russian nationalists are frothing at the mouth (again!), and American adoptions are now totally banned.
I have yet to see any outcry in Russia over the 1,220 adopted by Russian families who died in the same timeframe – 65 times the death rate! I have yet to see any outcry over the barbaric conditions within the Russian orphanages – places where most people would refuse to board their dogs.
One of my closest friends saw these orphanages with her own eyes. (She was forbidden to take any photos, of course.) She and her husband adopted two infants from Russia who are now healthy and happy 10 year old children playing sports and winning violin championships in The West.
The entire so-called controversy of Americans adopting Russian children is totally politically motivated. Russia’s protest that they are protecting their children is easily shown for the lie that it is. The politicians are offended that The West accused them of arresting, beating, torturing, and murdering Russian citizens who accuse their government of the aforementioned rape of the Russian economy. They counter it with the most ethically loathsome, morally despicable response they can think of - just to let the US know they disagree.
The Russian government doesn’t give a damn about the children in their orphanages. The Russian government doesn’t give a damn about any of its citizens. The Russian government’s sole concern is to line their own pockets with as much of Russia’s wealth as they can steal. They are stripping the Rodina bare, and the people are as sheep, accepting the collective rape of their country as they have for centuries. And when anyone accuses them of the crimes they commit against their own people on a daily basis, they choose to punish the most vulnerable of their own people – orphans! – just to show the world how tough they really are.
And they wonder why they aren’t taken seriously in international politics?
