Russian astrologer sues NASA over comet collision
MOSCOW, July 4 (RIA Novosti) - As NASA scientists celebrate American Independence Day on July 4 by colliding a spacecraft into Comet Tempel 1, a Moscow court will hear a lawsuit filed against the U.S. space agency.
Lawyer Alexander Molokhov, who is representing astrologist Marina Bai, said his client was seeking a ban on the NASA experiment, because she believed it "infringes upon her spiritual and life values, as well as the natural life of the cosmos, and will disrupt the natural balance of forces in the universe."
Bai is seeking 8.7 billion rubles (about $300 million) in damages.
The unique research operation is being conducted about 134 million kilometers (about 84 million miles) away from Earth. According to NASA experts, the spacecraft, which is called Deep Impact, will deploy a tiny impactor to smash into the nucleus of the comet. The idea is to make a crater that will provide a valuable insight into the icy core of the comet.
The impactor is equipped with a special camera to transmit pictures to Deep Impact. NASA experts will watch the collision using orbital telescopes.
