One of the two Bangladeshi conjoined twins woke up from an induced coma following a marathon surgery in a Melbourne hospital, The Australian reported on Thursday.

On Tuesday, doctors at the Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital finished a 32-hour marathon surgery to separate the twins, who were joined at the head and shared brain tissue and blood vessels. The 27-hour operation on the brain was followed by a five-hour reconstructive surgery, during which doctors assembled the twins' skulls using their skin, bone grafts and artificial materials.

"Trishna is awake and she looks absolutely fantastic," surgeon Virginia Maixner told Melbourne radio Thursday morning. "Krishna still is asleep... and we plan to wake her up today, but she is very stable and she looks really good."

Trishna is currently staying with her Australian legal guardian Moria Kelly.

"I am very, very positive. Trishna, I think, has sailed through. Krishna still has a few things ahead of her...but I am really positive that she has come through fine," Maixner said.

Doctors earlier said that there is a 25%-chance that both girls will survive and 50% probability that they will suffer brain damage.

According to statistics, only one of 100,000 women gives birth to conjoined twins, in 90% of cases they are girls. Operations to separate twins have been carried out recently in hospitals in Russia, France, Spain, Egypt and Indonesia.
