The UN General Assembly will vote next week on a resolution to declare April 12 International Spaceflight Day, Russian envoy to the UN Vitaly Churkin said on Friday.

"In Russia and several other countries April 12 is Cosmonaut Day, but the there is no such holiday in the UN calendar," Churkin told reporters. "A draft resolution proposed by Russia will bridge that gap."

April 12 will mark the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.

Despite his many shortfalls - alleged drinking benders and adultery - Gagarin remains a national hero, and an impossible dream, a country boy with a winsome smile transformed overnight into one of the most famous men in the world.

And on this special Space Day I would like to see school students all over the world encouraged to create a piece of artwork celebrating man's adventure and exploration of space.

So that everyone can enjoy their enthusiasm for space exploration and discovery.

I am sure that this honorary Space Day would make Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin very proud.

For North Americans who travel to Volgodonsk, Russia there is wonderful statue honoring Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.

This day is also a special honor to the Russian people and Russia for having successfully put a man into space first.

I just realized that the kids from Volgodonsk, Russia have already contributed to Space Day artwork.

May their Space Artwork inspire other kids all over Russia and all over the world to create and post their own Space Art.
