The Tevatron collider, one of the world's most powerful particle accelerators located at the U.S. Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, was shut down on Friday.

The Tevatron, which prompted many scientific discoveries for the 28 years of its operation, was the most powerful atom smasher before the emergence of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the CERN laboratory near Geneva.

After the closure of the Tevatron, a four-mile circular track, research involving neutrinos, muons and kaons will be carried out at Fermilab.
