Majority of Americans oppose spreading democracy abroad - poll

WASHINGTON, August 4 (RIA Novosti, Arkady Orlov) - According to a Public Agenda opinion poll, 58 % of Americans do not support U.S. efforts to "promote democracy abroad," saying foreign countries should develop democracy on their own.

In comparison, 38 % of Americans said the U.S. should help other countries become democratic.

The poll results contradict the current U.S. government policy of "promoting democracy abroad," one of the top foreign policy priorities.

The poll was conducted at the request of Foreign Affairs magazine with the support of the Ford Foundation.

Public Agenda polled 1,004 respondents, 18 years and older, in the United States.
