A Russian rapper, Noize MC, who spent 10 days in jail for mocking police, said on Wednesday his "public apology" was intended to be ironic.

Ivan Alexeyev, aka Noize MC, was arrested at a concert in the southern Russian city of Volgograd on July 31 after mocking the police as "animals."

"It was a way out of a difficult situation," Alexeyev said about his video rap apology, "Ten Days in Heaven," which was shown on local TV and posted on the Internet.

Alexeyev's producer, Grigory Zorin, said the rapper was tricked into recording the video but police said he did it on his own accord.

Zorin said he was going to sue the Volgograd police for copyright infringement because he owns all of Noize MC's publishing rights and the video clip was publicly released on television and the Internet without authorization.

Alexeyev said his apology, seen by fans as cowardly, was intended to be ironic but complained that "many people took it wrong."

Noize MC attracted media attention with his song "Mercedes S-666" about a high-profile car incident involving Anatoly Barkov, vice-president of Russia's oil giant LUKoil.

Two doctors, Vera Sidelnikova and Olga Alexandrina, were killed on February 25 when their car collided with a Mercedes belonging to Barkov, who denied that either he or his driver were at fault.
