With only three days remaining until the big day, the weather for April 29 looks set to be a spoiler for everyone wishing to cheer Prince William and Kate Middleton on their way to Westminster Abbey and back to Buckingham Palace.

Despite earlier predictions that the warm spell which embraced London for the Easter Bank holiday will last through one more weekend, an updated weather forecast is predicting more usual British spring conditions.

Meteorologists said the weather on Friday is likely to be cool and windy, with showers and thunder also possible.

"It is looking at the moment that there are going to be quite brisk north-easterly winds, showers and possibly a few rumblings of thunder - that's sneaking into the charts at the moment," said Aisling Creevey, a forecaster at MeteoGroup.

Showers would mean Kate Middleton's wedding dress would be hidden from the crowd behind big umbrellas and would also spoil the couple's plans to travel from the Abbey to Buckingham Palace in an open-top carriage. They would have to make their triumphant journey in the glass carriage that Princess Diana used to travel to her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981.

However, the British capital is known for its constantly changing weather and there is still hope that the meteorologists are wrong and rain won't spoil the big day.

But even bad weather is unlikely to stop the thousands of enthusiasts who will flock to central London to greet the couple.

One of them, John Loughrey, a 56-year old former assistance chef from London, arrived at Westminster Abbey on Monday with a sleeping bag and umbrella to occupy the best position to see the wedding.

Loughrey, who says he is a great fan of Princess Diana and the Royal Family, said he will keep his spot until Saturday.

"Diana would be proud of her son Prince William and Catherine's marriage. She will be with them in spirit in Westminster Abbey on their special day and always," Loughrey, wearing a Kate and William T-shirt emblazoned with the words "Diana Would Be Proud", said on Sky News.

The weather is one of many unknowns about the wedding along with the details of the wedding gown and flowers, the honeymoon, the reception menu and the royal titles which Kate will take on as a gift from the Queen. The new royal is widely expected to become the Duchess of Clarence, Cambridge or Sussex.

As the final countdown for the big day begins, British bookmakers are accepting bets on all these details and other eventualities, including Kate signing a prenuptial agreement before the ceremony, Sir Elton John singing live at the reception, and Prince Harry, William's best man, dropping the ring.
