A majority of Russian citizens believe their country is unlikely to achieve economic prosperity in the next decade, according to a public opinion poll published by the Romir research group on Wednesday.
The poll, held among 1,000 urban residents aged 18-60 in towns with a population of over 100,000 and more in eight federal districts, showed 42 percent of respondents believed Russia could achieve economic propensity in the next 10 years or more, while 18 percent of those polled said the country would never reach this goal.
Only seven percent of respondents assessed Russia’s economic condition as good, one percent as excellent and 24 percent as normal. The share of optimists was higher among respondents younger than 25.
When asked to evaluate the condition of the Russian economy today, 39 percent of respondents called it satisfactory whilst 29 percent characterized it as bad.
“The percentage of respondents negatively assessing the condition of the Russian economy rises with age (from 52 percent in the 18-24 years age bracket to 81 percent in the 51-60 years age group) and social status,” Romir said in a statement.
