RUSSIAN BROTHERS FAIL TO CROSS INDIAN OCEAN

MOSCOW, May 16 (RIA Novosti) - The rowing marathon of twins Alexander and Sergei Sinelnik across the Indian Ocean from Australia to Africa has ended in failure.

Alexander could no longer row with his left arm, which he broke last year, so the burden fell on Sergei. The boat was moving at a speed of 10-20 kmph instead of the intended 60 kmph.

Expedition staff asked the Australian coast guard to find a ship that could take the brothers and their boat on board. A Japanese ship heading for France came to their aid, and the crew is now deciding how best to take the brothers' boat on board.

The Sinelniks started their rowing marathon across the Indian Ocean in a two-man "Rus" boat from Carnarvon (Australia) on April 22. They intended to arrive in Tanzania (East Africa) without stopping at any ports. In the very beginning of the voyage, their water distiller broke, leaving them with only a six-day supply of water. Initially, the brothers had hoped to continue the marathon and ask an Australian ship to bring them a new distiller.

However, Alexander's injury frustrated their plans, and on the 24th day of the expedition the brothers decided to stop the voyage.

They have not given up their goal to cross the Indian Ocean and will begin preparation for the next expedition as soon as possible.
