* At the 36th European Boxing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria (ended July 23):

- David Ayrapetyan won the gold medal in the under-48 kg category, defeating Alfonso Pinto (Italy) on points, 36-24 in the final bout

- Georgy Balakshin won gold in the under-51 kg category, beating Samir Mammadov (Azerbaijan) on points, 43-30

- Ali Aliyev won gold in the under-54 kg category, beating Detelin Dalakliev (Georgiev) on points, 36-24

- Albert Selimov won gold in the under-57 kg category, beating Shahin Imranov (Azerbaijan) on points, 28-10

- Alexei Tishchenko won gold in the under-60 kg category, beating Hrachik Javakhyan (Armenia) on points, 39-15

- Oleg Komisarov took silver in the under-64 kg category, losing to Boris Georgiev (Bulgaria) on points, 17-25

- Islam Timurziyev won gold in the over-91 kg category, beating Robert Helenius (Finland) on points, 32-14

* At the 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships in Zagreb, Croatia (through August 5):

- Russia won the silver medal in the 10m air pistol junior men's team competition with 1,717 points. China won gold with 1,726 points, and India finished third with 1,716 points

- Vladimir Goncharov won the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol men's competition with 681.1 points. Wei Pang (China) won gold with 683.8 points, and Jakkrit Panichpatikum (Thailand) took silver with 683 points

* Russia's national men's volleyball team beat China 3-1, 3-0 in the two away matches in Group C of the FIVB World League 2006 tournament.
