LVIV, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - Work has begun in the west Ukrainian city of Lviv to lay the foundations for the construction of a stadium that will host matches at Euro 2012, a spokesperson for the city said on Friday.

The stadium in Lviv will be located 12 km (7.5 miles) from the city centre, with seating for 33,400 fans.

Apart from Lviv, the other Ukrainian cities chosen to host matches in the tournament are the capital, Kiev, Donetsk, and Dnepropetrovsk.

Ukraine is set to jointly host the 2012 European soccer championships with Poland. However, Michel Platini, the president of European soccer's governing body, said in early July that Ukraine and Poland were experiencing problems in preparing for the tournament.

Media reports have suggested Scotland is eager to host the event if Poland and Ukraine drop out, while Italy and Spain have also been mentioned as possible replacements.

The UEFA Executive Committee is due to review preparations by Poland and Ukraine at a meeting in Bordeaux on 25-26 September.
