Real Madrid confirm Ramos as new manager ahead of Zenit game
17:19 09/12/2008
MOSCOW, December 9 (RIA Novosti) - Real Madrid sacked trainer Bernd Schuster and replaced him with former Tottenham Hotspur manager Juande Ramos on Tuesday, 24 hours before a home Champions League match against Zenit St. Petersburg.
The club announced the move at a press-conference in Madrid. Real are fifth in the Primera Liga after losing 4-3 to one of Ramos' former clubs, Sevilla, on Sunday.
Ramos, 54, was dismissed by Tottenham in October after the club's worst ever start to a league campaign. However, he had previously led Sevilla to back-to-back UEFA Cup wins in 2006 and 2007.
Real's match against Zenit on Wednesday is essentially meaningless as Juventus and Real have already secured qualification from the group for the Champions League play-off stages, and Zenit are guaranteed third place and a UEFA Cup spot.
