MOSCOW, January 26 (RIA Novosti) - Zenit St. Petersburg's board of directors are to meet later on Monday to decide whether to accept Arsenal's bid for forward Andrei Arshavin.

Talks continued throughout the weekend, but no deal was struck. Zenit general director Maxim Mitforanov stated on Sunday afternoon that the clubs were close to a compromise agreement. He earlier said a decision would be reached "on Friday or Saturday."

Arsenal have given Zenit until today, January 26, to settle the issue.

The English Premier League side earlier offered 12 million pounds ($16.4 million), plus another possible three million depending on the player's future performances, for Arshavin. Zenit turned the offer down. Russia's Sport Express has reported that Zenit faxed a new payment proposal to Arsenal on Sunday evening. There are no further details.

"I'm waiting for a final decision," Arshavin told the paper. "The talks don't depend on me. I haven't been in touch with the club management, so I haven't heard a clear 'yes' or 'no' yet."

The 27-year-old player earlier said he would go on strike if he were not sold to a foreign side.

Arshavin was linked with a number of clubs, including Barcelona and Tottenham, in the summer after leading Russia to the semifinals of Euro 2008. However, Gazprom-controlled Zenit subsequently turned down a number of offers, reportedly in excess of $30 million, for the player as "too low." They have since dropped their asking price.

In other news, Roman Pavlyuchenko, at present Russia's only representative in English soccer, scored his 12th goal in 24 games in Britain as his Tottenham Hotspur side were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United. Pavlyuchenko opened the scoring with a well-taken header in the fifth minute, but the world club champions hit back with two goals in the 35th and 36th minutes to win 2-1.

Pavlyuchenko has scored 9 goals in 7 cup games this season, and three in 17 Premier League ties. He is the North London club's joint top scorer.
