© RIA Novosti.MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - Five Russian tennis players will play on Friday for spots in the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.
The most anticipated women's quarterfinal will be between Russia's Alisa Kleybanova and reigning Kremlin Cup champion Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. Kleybanova is 27th in the Women's Tennis Association rankings, just off her career-high of 23, while former world No. 1 Jankovic has fallen to ninth position after a disappointing year.
In other women's singles quarterfinal matches Russia's Maria Kirilenko will play against eighth seed Franceska Schiavonne of Italy, while Vera Dushevina will face Olga Govortsova of Belarus.
In men's singles, Russian No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny, who lost in the final of the Japan Open two weeks ago, will fight for a semifinal birth against Ukraine's Serhiy Stakhovskiy, while Yevgeny Korolyov of Russia is also set to meet another Ukrainian player, Ilya Marchenko.
On his way to the quarterfinals, Korolyov knocked out former world No. 1 Marat Safin of Russia, who made the Kremlin Cup the final tournament of his tennis career. He announced his retirement earlier this year.
