Russian figure skaters Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin won bronze in the ice dance competition at the Olympic Games in Vancouver.

Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won the gold, with the silver going to Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the United States.

The Russian world champions led after the compulsory dance but dropped to third after the original dance. The positions were unchanged after Monday's free dance, with the Canadian pair scoring 221.57 points, the Americans 215.74 and the Russians 207.64.

The second Russian pair, Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski, finished ninth with 185.86 points due to a poor score in the free dance, while Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev took 15th place with 163.35 points.

Domnina and Shabalin skated last of the top three pairs, but it was already clear that there was little hope of moving up the rankings. Davis and White went first, setting the bar high for the Canadians with 107.19 points in the free dance, but Virtue and Moir bettered that with 110.42.

The Canadians' program was filled with complex technical elements, yet gave them no problems, and the home crowd's applause showed they had no doubt who would win gold, even with the Russians yet to skate.

The fourth and final figure skating medal at the Vancouver Olympics will be awarded on Thursday in the ladies singles competition. After winning three golds and a bronze in Turin in 2006, Russia has just one silver and one bronze this year.
