Russia avenged its Olympic hockey defeat to Canada on Friday with a physical 5-2 win in the Ice Hockey World Championship quarterfinals in Germany.

In Saturday's semifinals, the two-time defending world champions will face the host nation Germany, who defeated Switzerland 1:0 earlier on Friday.

Canada went on to win the Olympic crown in Vancouver and several stars, including Sidney Crosby, who scored the winning goal in the gold medal game against the United States, are missing from the roster in Germany.

Russia, on the other hand, has two-time reigning NHL MVP Alexander Ovechkin and two of Thursday's scorers, Pavel Datsyuk and Evgeni Malkin, in their roster and there was clearly no love lost in a game littered with penalties.

A total of 16 penalties have been imposed during the game: seven on Russia and nine on Canada.

It was 10-year NHL veteran Maxim Afinogenov who got the first goal, with a minute remaining in the first period, with Datsyuk firing in the second a couple of minutes after the interval.

Malkin added the third on a power play and the second period ended with a shoving match that took officials several minutes to sort out.

Sergei Fedorov added the fourth goal on the 48th minute, while Malkin scored an empty-netter with four minutes to go in the third period.

Canada's John Tavares and Matt Duschene scored the goals for their team on the 54th and 60th minutes of the final period.

Russia has 26 consecutive matches at the world championships, including the last two gold medals, and after impressive wins over Finland and now Canada are favorites to add a third title.
