Moscow will assist Sochi in holding the 2014 Winter Olympics, the Russian capital’s mayor said on Thursday.
“Moscow, with its wide experience of constructing sports centers, will do everything possible [to assist] with the Winter Olympics in Sochi”, Yury Luzhkov said at the sports forum Russia Is A Sport Power.
He also added that Moscow had trained future Olympic champions, and the main aim of the city’s authorities was concentrating its resources.
“Our purpose is to engage the available infrastructure in order to make sport accessible to every Muscovite by means of the program “Moscow Sports-3”, the mayor said.
“We should not only win medals but also increase lifespans”, he said.
The Russia Is A Sports Power international sports forum is taking place on the 30th anniversary of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics.
Conferences, festive and sports events, competitions and exhibitions are on the agenda of the forum. A total of about 4,000 people will attend the forum, including senior Russian and foreign officials.
