Russia's national rugby team rounded off its two-game tour of New Zealand with a solid 31-7 victory over local side South Canterbury on Thursday, Rugby.ru Website reported on Friday.

Rugby World Cup qualifiers Russia began the first half confidently under heavy rain with a try on the eighth minute by Viktor Gresev.

South Canterbury hit back, their first attack proving to be a success with a try by Eric Smith that put the locals ahead of the Russians after a conversion by Jason Merret.

South Canterbury's 7-5 lead lasted almost until the last minute of the first half, but the Russians were awarded a penalty try after South Canterbury tried to kill the ball for the third time, leaving a 12-7 advantage over the hosts at half-time.

The rain stopped before a second half that left the host side without a score, while the Russians rammed home their attacks. Igor Galinovsky, Yevgeny Matveev and substitute Andrei Garbuzov each got a try and Alexander Yanyushkin made two conversions to leave the final score at 31-7.

The referee was busy with the yellow card, with both teams having two players sent to the sinbin on two occasions after fighting broke out.

Last week the Russians played in New Plymouth, where they defeated 33-24 local side Taranaki.

Russia will make its debut appearance at a Rugby World Cup when the tournament is held in New Zealand in September and October 2011. Russia is in Pool C along with Australia, Ireland, Italy and the United States.

The team will be without current attack coach Steve Diamond, who announced earlier this week that he is leaving Russia to coach British side Sale Sharks.
