Australian Open quarterfinalist Ekaterina Makarova will replace Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Russia's Fed Cup team to face Spain next month, the country's captain told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

Pavlyuchenkova, the world No. 16, announced earlier that she would miss the February 4-5 tie in Moscow to get overdue treatment for a recurring shoulder injury.

"Makarova will play instead of Pavlyuchenkova," Shamil Tarpishchev said. Maria Kirilenko should have been next according to the rankings, but she has an injury, so we've opted for Makarova, especially considering her successful showing in Australia."

Makarova defied her lowly ranking of 56 to cause three upsets on her charge to the quarterfinals, the most sensational of which was her straight-sets defeat of 13-time grand slam champion Serena Williams in round four.

She was stopped by compatriot Maria Sharapova, who outmuscled Makarova on Wednesday to set up a semifinal with Czech second seed Petra Kvitova.

Makarova will team up with Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nadia Petrova for the World Group match on the hard courts of Moscow's Olympiisky Sports Complex.
