Russian figure skating star Evgeny Plushenko will have an operation on his injured knee in Germany on February 23, he said Friday.
Plushenko skated through the pain to win his seventh European title in January in a dramatic comeback after two years away from the sport.
“Operation February 23 in Germany,” Plushenko wrote on his official Twitter page.
Plushenko returned to domestic competition in December, winning the Russian national championships in Saransk against largely unheralded opponents with an untidy performance.
He had been absent from the international circuit since winning gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics due to a disqualification over a breach of amateur competition rules and various injuries.
He received special dispensation from skating authorities to take part in the European Championships after failing to accrue enough points in competition this season.
