Spartak Moscow winger Aiden McGeady has been called up to the Ireland squad to play the Czech Republic in a friendly February 29, the Football Association of Ireland said on Friday.

McGeady could line up against Spartak teammate Marek Suchy at the match in Dublin after the Czech defender was called up by his country.

McGeady faces a struggle to be fit for the game after he ruptured his ankle ligaments while training with Spartak in Spain during the Russian winter break.

Playing the Czech Republic will allow Ireland to prepare for their opponents at the Euro 2012 championships in June, Ireland coach Giovanni Trappatoni said.

“The Czech Republic are a strong team and their system is similar to Croatia and Spain. This game is vital in helping us choose our 23-player squad for May.

“We will continue to monitor our players afterwards and keep a close eye on their fitness,” Trappatoni said on the UEFA website.

Ireland will play world champions Spain, as well as Italy and Croatia at Euro 2012, and will be based in Poland for the group stage.

McGeady has scored five goals in 30 appearances since joining Spartak from Celtic in 2010 for a reported fee of 9.5 million pounds.

McGeady was born in Glasgow but chose to represent Ireland, and has picked up 46 caps since his full debut in 2004, scoring twice.
