Vera Zvonareva may still be included in Russia's Fed Cup squad for this month's semifinal against Serbia despite not making the initial lineup, captain Shamil Tarpishchev told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
The Russian Tennis Federation announced earlier that Maria Kirilenko, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Vesnina were chosen for the April 21-22 tie on clay.
That came a day after Tarpishchev said Zvonareva would be named in the squad.
But Tarpishchev told RIA Novosti on Wednesday that he can still tinker with the lineup.
"Vera is rather subject to injuries," Tarpishchev said, adding he didn't want to imperil Zvonareva's participation at the French Open, or at London 2012.
"If she is ruled out for another month or doesn't show her best at Roland Garros, she will be out of Olympic Squad," he said.
"Zvonareva will be training with the team, she has to prepare on clay anyway. If she is physically ready, we can change one name in our application 24 hours before the game. That's what we are counting on. We hope that Vera will help the team."
Of the five, Zvonareva is the highest-ranked Russia at 10. World No. 2 Maria Sharapova is not participating.
Zvonareva, 27, who has 12 career titles and is a former world No. 2, has had a modest start to 2012.
Her best showing was at last week's Family Circle Cup in Charleston, where she was knocked out of the quarterfinals by Czech Lucie Safarova.
Four-time Fed Cup champion Russia is considered the overwhelming favorite, with a 3-0 head-to-head record over the Serbs. The last encounter was a 3-2 victory for the Russians in Belgrade.
Russia lost last year's final to the Czech Republic.
The match is on indoor clay at the Megasport Arena in Moscow.
