Sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny battled past world No. 93 Philipp Petzschner of Germany and into the second round Tuesday at the €400,000 Munich Open on clay.
Youzhny, Russia's top player, prevailed in 1 hour 45 minutes, winning 7-5, 7-5, setting up a second round match against Santiago Giraldo of Colombia at the French Open warm-up event.
Earlier, Defending champion Nikolay Davydenko suffered a shock first-round defeat to 210th-ranked Canadian Roberto Farah.
Davydenko, the world No. 56, capitulated in 1 hour and 22 minutes against the qualifier to lose 6-3, 6-2.
The Russian beat home player Florian Mayer to secure last year's crown, which was his last career title.
