Andrei Arshavin is arguably the biggest football star to emerge from Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union but he is no hit with the ladies, at least according to beauty queen Alina Chus, who dubbed him “gruesome” in an interview with RIA Novosti on Saturday.
Chus, voted Miss Russian Premier League by fans this season, singled out Arshavin, on loan at Zenit St. Petersburg, for a public snub when asked to name the most attractive players in the league.
“Arshavin’s gruesome,” she said.
Chus displayed a healthy preference for her favorite team, FC Kuban, picking their goalkeeper Alexander Belenov and Ivorian star striker Lacina Traore among her top three most attractive players.
Arshavin’s Zenit teammate Alexander Kerzhakov also earned a place among Chus’ favorites, she said.
“As a guy Sasha Belenov is cool. Lacina Traore and Kerzhakov aren’t bad either,” she said.
Chus then reeled off a list of four more Kuban players as her runners up, including young Costa Rican striker Marcos Urena.
Arshavin was sent on loan to Zenit, his first club, from Arsenal after struggling for first-team football at the London club.
He impressed on loan with three goals and four assists in 10 games, prompting speculation that Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti may seek to make the move permanent.
