Russia's weightlifters will end their eight-year wait for an Olympic gold medal in London, 2011 European champion Vladislav Lukanin told R-Sport on Tuesday.

Russia's weightlifters will end their eight-year wait for an Olympic gold medal in London, 2011 European champion Vladislav Lukanin told R-Sport on Tuesday.

Dmitry Berestov's gold in the 105 kilogram category in Athens in 2004 is the only time Russia has won an Olympic title since the end of the Atlanta Games in 1996, despite regular world and European championship triumphs.

The last Olympics in Beijing in 2008 saw four silver and three bronze medals for Russia.

"There will be medals, including gold ones," Lukanin, who took up powerlifting after his European title and has since set two world records, said.

"I have hopes for Alexander Ivanov, who takes part in the 94 kilogram category and Khadzhimurat Akkaev in the 105 kilogram category."

Russia will be vying for medals in 34 of 37 disciplines at the Games.
