Igor Andreev beat Israel's Dudi Sela in straight sets to reach the second round of the Los Angeles Farmers Classic.
The Russian won two of four break points to beat Sela 7-6 (4), 6-4 in 85 minutes late Tuesday.
Andreev will meet 141st-ranked Ricardas Berankis in the second round.
Qualifiier Berankis upset Germany's Bjorn Phau, ranked 76, in another Tuesday match, winning 7-6 (8), 6-4 in and hour and 31 minutes.
The prize pool is $557,550, one-fifth of which go to the winner and $53,000 to the runner-up.
Andreev was not called for the national team for the coming Olympic Games in London as Russia coach Shamil Tarpishchev opted for Mikhail Youzhny, Nikolay Davydenko, Alexander Bogomolov and Dmitry Tursunov.
