LONDON, August 12 (RIA Novosti)
A late goal from Serbia’s Vanja Udovicic gave his country the bronze medal in the men’s water polo Sunday, edging out neighbors Montenegro 12-11.
Udovicic struck 55 seconds from the end of the match before Serbian goalkeeper Slobodan Soro saved his team by blocking three shots as Montenegro desperately hunted for an equalizer to take the match to extra time.
The result gives Serbia its second water polo bronze in successive Olympics and thwarts Montenegro’s hopes of their second Olympic medal as an independent country.
Before the two countries separated in 2006, a Serbia and Montenegro team won silver in Athens in 2004.
